The Faculty of Regional Development and International Studies (FRDIS) Enters the New Year with New Leadership

10. 2. 2025

The Faculty of Regional Development and International Studies (FRDIS) began the new year not only with a new calendar number but also with new leadership under Dean Ondřej Konečný. At a staff meeting held on February 6, key challenges and changes, the faculty’s strategic direction, and significant investments in the academic environment for 2025 were presented.

One of the key topics was the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in teaching. The faculty leadership aims to encourage students, educators, and researchers to adopt AI in both learning and coursework. Students will be educated on using AI for content creation and the importance of transparently disclosing and citing its use. The approach to AI usage will be clearly outlined in course syllabi and introductory materials. Students at FRDIS can already enroll in a course focused on AI.

A major challenge this year will be adjusting the completion of bachelor’s degree programs. Starting in the 2027/2028 academic year, bachelor’s thesis defenses will be removed from the state final examination framework. During their studies (typically in the fifth semester), students will choose between a bachelor’s project, which focuses on practical skills, and a bachelor’s study, which is more theoretical. “By offering two options, we allow students to choose the form of work and skill development that best suits their needs and future careers. Those who are more communicative and eager to apply their findings to practice will choose the bachelor’s project, while those with a more analytical and theoretical mindset will opt for the bachelor’s study. This step encourages students to take responsibility for their education, adapt to change, and enables us to respond adequately to major shifts in the job market,” explained Dean Ondřej Konečný.

Vice Dean for Strategy and Development Helena Lorencová outlined plans for developing the faculty’s strategic vision for the 2026+ period. The academic community will be invited to participate through surveys and working groups.

Vice Dean for International Affairs Lenka Zouhar Ludvíková provided an update on the implementation of the OP JAK project. In addition to supporting education, the project will modernize the faculty’s infrastructure, including new air handling systems in the auditorium (2025), expanded Wi-Fi coverage, new coworking spaces, and updated PC equipment (2026). Investments in 2027 will cover realization of two laboratories for our students, Environmental Studies Lab and Social Studies Lab.

Faculty Secretary Maciej Molak reviewed and clarified procedures for attendance, business travel, and project management. Regular meetings between project leaders and managers will be held to improve coordination. The faculty uses the Trello platform for project management and has an internal “Looking for Solutions” web resource where staff can find information and assistance on topics such as attendance, IT, PR, research, studies, and project management.

The staff meeting confirmed the faculty’s direction toward modernizing education, improving infrastructure, and supporting the academic and professional development of students and staff.

As part of the university-wide OP JAK project, the faculty is focusing on developing the academic environment through investments in facilities and strengthening the professional skills of academic staff. The goals include reducing student dropout rates, improving mobility, innovating study programs, and creating stronger connections with practice.

Planned investments also include PhD teaching infrastructure (PhD infra), such as eye-tracking technology, high-performance computers for GIS, a drone with a camera, and a hazard box. These innovations will enhance scientific work and modernize the faculty’s research environment.

The FRDIS leadership emphasized the importance of these changes for the faculty’s future and called on the academic community to actively participate in discussions and the implementation of strategic plans.
