Mendel University Opens "Islands of Discovery" Exhibit at VIDA! Science Center

Mendel University is opening the Islands of Discovery exhibit at the VIDA! Science Center, focusing on fascinating topics from both natural and social sciences. The exhibit invites children and adults alike to ask questions across various fields and explore answers in an interactive format. It will be on display on the first floor from mid-December 2024 until the end of November 2025. Researchers and scientists from all university departments contributed as content guarantors for the exhibit’s various topics.

“Our goal was, among other things, to show that the work of scientists plays a crucial role in addressing today’s major challenges. We wanted to reveal, in a fun and engaging way, what our university’s scientists are working on and to spark curiosity in children that could grow into a passion for science in the future,” said Jan Mareš, Rector of Mendel University in Brno.

The exhibition aims to captivate not only children but adults as well. “The exhibit demonstrates that the world around us is full of mysteries waiting to be discovered. We also want children to leave with the feeling that some discoveries may be waiting just for them. At five research stations, they can design a city of the future or find out where water disappears. They’ll also explore what we might eat in the future and design their own pizza. Younger visitors will surely appreciate peepholes and other interactive elements. We believe everyone will enjoy the chillout zone, where they’ll feel as if they are in a vibrant university forest,” explained Bára Dvořáková, the exhibit’s concept creator.

“The exhibition, created for the anniversary of Mendel University in Brno, brings a bit of nature and new sustainable living trends to VIDA!—a key theme for our times. I believe that collaboration is the only way forward, and I’m pleased we could join forces with Mendel University for this exhibit,” said Tomáš Mejzlík, director of the VIDA! Science Center.
